จากการค้นพบ “เส้นถักสำริดโบราณ” ที่ลูกค้านำมาให้ทำเลียนแบบ ครูได้ใช้พื้นฐานความรู้เรื่องการทำทองที่สืบทอดมาจากคุณพ่อ นายเชื้อ วงศ์ใหญ่ ในการแกะลวดลายออกมาว่าสร้อยเส้นนั้นเริ่มต้นและสิ้นสุดการถักอย่างไร จากความตั้งใจแกะลายออกมาทีละปล้องทีละข้อจนสามารถทราบถึงขั้นตอนในการทำ นี่คือต้นกำเนิดของเครื่องทองโบราณสุโขทัยของครูสมสมัย ในเวลาต่อๆ มาจึงพัฒนารูปแบบมีการเดินลายงานฉลุ และลงยา เมื่อทองสุโขทัยเข้าตลาดได้สักระยะหนึ่งจึงเริ่มแพร่หลาย และเป็นที่ต้องการของลูกค้ามากขึ้น ปัจจุบันเอกลักษณ์งานทองโบราณสุโขทัยก็ยังคงอยู่ มีแต่เพียงเครื่องไม้เครื่องมือที่ได้ปรับเปลี่ยนให้เข้ากับยุคสมัยเพื่อให้ทันกับการผลิต จากคนรุ่นก่อนได้วางมือ คนรุ่นใหม่แทนที่ สิ่งสร้างสรรค์ใหม่ๆ ก็ก่อเกิดตามไปด้วย ผู้ที่มาสืบทอดเจตนาความเป็นทองโบราณนามสุโขทัยต่อจากบรรพชนคนรุ่นตา ต่อมารุ่นแม่ จนถึงรุ่นลูก

“Making goldware requires elaborate skills. It is not a difficult job, yet it takes time to finish. I am proud to inherit this art as well as teaching it to other. Also, I am delighted to create unique goldware of Sukhothai.”

From the discovery of “ancient woven bronze necklace” which a customer brought to me as a model for reproduction, I used by basic knowledge of carvings received from my father, Mr. ChueWongyai, to interpret the pattern of that necklace. I have tried to understand each piece of pattern until I got how to make it. This is the beginning of Master Somsamai’s ancient Sukhothaigoldware. After that, the pattern has been developed by adding engraving and lacquering. When Sukhothaigoldware was on the market, it became well-known and popular among customers. presently, the identity of ancient Sukhothaigoldware still exists. Only tools and equipment used for making it have changed for the benefit of production. The old generation has stopped making it, which leads to the start of new generation craftsmen who came up with innovative ideas. They inherited the uniqueness of ancient Sukhothaigoldware which have been conserved from generations to generations.
