งานช่างลายรดน้ำ งานประณีตศิลป์ของไทยที่มักพบเห็นตามบานประตูหน้าต่างของวัดวาอาราม รวมไปถึงบนบานประตูตู้พระไตรปิฏกนั้น ขั้นตอนและวิธีการทำตั้งแต่การทำน้ำยาหรดารที่ใช้เขียนลวดลายลงบนชิ้นงานในส่วนที่ไม่ต้องการให้ทองติด แล้วเช็ดชิ้นงานด้วยยางรักเพื่อให้ทองติด ก่อนจะปิดทองคำเปลวให้ทั่วแล้วใช้น้ำค่อยๆ รดและถูเบาๆ เพื่อชะล้างทองส่วนเกินออกเหลือเพียงส่วนที่เป็นลวดลายไว้ วิธีที่ต้องใช้น้ำรดนี่เองจึงทำให้เราเรียกงานประเภทนี้ว่า “ลายรดน้ำ”

“Lacquer is the important thing for lacquerwares”

Lacquer ware is the fine art of Thailand often seen in the windows and doors of temples including the doors of Buddhist Scriptures’ cabinets. The process starts from making the Horadarn liquid used for drawing the pattern on the work piece on the parts which we do not want the gold to stick. After that wife the work piece with the lacquer in order to make the gold leaf stick. Then, cover with gold leaves thoroughly and slowly pour the water on it and scrub gently for removing the excessive parts and remain only the pattern. The method of water pouring is what we call “Lai Rod Nam”.
