การต้องลาย หรือการต๋งลายของล้านนา หมายถึง การตอกลายลงบนแผ่นโลหะทางภาคกลางเรียกว่า การบุดุนโลหะ เพื่อให้เกิดความต่างระดับ มิติสูง ต่ำของลวดลาย ลักษณะเด่นของการต้องลายล้านนา คือ การแกะลายทั้งสองด้านแล้วใช้วิธีการดุนลายจากด้านในให้นูนตามโครงร่างรอบนอกของลายก่อนแล้วจึงใช้วิธีการตอกลายจากด้านนอกเข้าไปเพื่อทำรายละเอียดอีกครั้งหนึ่ง นี่คือเอกลักษณ์ของงานครูดิเรก ซึ่งมีแรงบันดาลใจมาจากการได้เห็นคนรุ่นเก่าตอกลายบนโลหะมาตั้งแต่จำความได้ รู้แต่ว่าโตขึ้นอยากทำงานนี้เป็นอย่างมาก และพอได้ทำก็เกิดความรักในงาน และพยายามจะถ่ายทอดและสืบสานให้เป็นมรดกแก่คนรุ่นหลังต่อไป

Tong Lai of Lanna means engraving the patterns on the metal plates called by the central area as metal engraving to make the difference in dimension and height of the pattern.
