ครูคำอ้ายคือศิลปินด้านการแกะสลักไม้ที่เป็นผู้ริเริ่มการสอนแกะสลักไม้ด้วยวิธีการสมัยใหม่ ใช้ชุดสื่อการสอนสำเร็จรูป เป็นผู้มีแนวคิดนำสมัยประสานประโยชน์และใช้บ้านของตนเองเป็นสถานที่ถ่ายทอดการแกะสลักไม้ และก่อตั้ง “ศูนย์ส่งเสริมชุมชนหัตถกรรม”(บ้านช้าง) ขึ้น รวมทั้งมีแนวคิดในการจัดตั้งกลุ่มกองทุนการแกะสลักไม้ เพื่อให้ช่างแกะสลักไม้มีความมั่นใจและมั่นคงในอาชีพ สามารถสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะที่มิใช่มุ่งเพียงการค้าเท่านั้น งานของครูนั้นถือเป็นประติมากรรมรูปลักษณ์ของช้าง ช้างถือเป็นพื้นฐานของการเรียนแกะสลักไม้ เพราะโครงสร้างของช้างมันใหญ่ ขาไม่หักง่าย แล้วช้างแกะสลักเป็นเครื่องสักการะถวายต่อศาลพระภูมิตามประเพณีไทย เป็นของที่ระลึกที่นักท่องเที่ยวชอบ ครูก็ฝึกแกะช้าง ทำหลายๆ แบบ ก็ขายได้
(ปัจจุบันครูอายุมาก และประสบปัญหาด้านสุขภาพ จึงไม่ได้ทำงานแกะสลักไม้แล้ว)

“Master Kham-ai’s expertise in wood carvings is a result of experience, self-practice and trial and errors.”

Master Kham-ai is a wood carving artist who initiated teaching wood carving by modern method, which is instructional media package. He is forward thinking and uses his own house to be the teaching place. Also, he established “Community Handicraft Promotion Center” (Baan Chang). He is thinking of forming the wood carving fund for wood carving makers. The mater said that he is confident and thinks that this profession is stable. He can create art which is not only for commercial purposes but he makes the replica of elephants. To learn carving, elephant is regarded as the basic model because of its large structure and firm legs. In addition, wood carved elephants are usually made for offering to the shrines according to Thai tradition as well as selling as souvenirs for tourists. The master then practiced to carve elephants in various forms which have been successfully sold.
(Currently, the master is getting old and has health problem, so he doesn’t work on wood carvings anymore.)
