ประเพณีการแข่งเรือเมืองน่าน วัฒนธรรมที่สืบทอดมาช้านาน คือแรงบันดาลใจที่ผลักดันทักษะฝีมือด้านงานหัตถกรรม สู่การสร้างผลงานที่ทรงคุณค่าให้กับชุมชนบ้านดอนไชยใต้ที่มีเอกลักษณ์ การแกะหัวเรือพญานาค หรือที่เรียกกันว่า “หัวโอ้” ประกอบด้วยจมูก เขี้ยวหมา เขี้ยวแต เขี้ยวย่อย เขี้ยวฟอง ลูกตา คาง แก้ม หู หงอน รูจมูก เหงือกนอก เหงือกใน ภายในปากที่อ้า อวดเขี้ยวขาวงอนโง้งนั้นนิยมแขวนกระดิ่ง ส่วนลวดลายตัวเรือนิยมแขวนกระดิ่ง ส่วนลวดลายตัวเรือ นิยมใช้ลายเถาวัลย์ ลายกระจัง ลายกนก สามตัวคว่ำหงาย วางเรียงต่อกันไป โดยใช้เพียงแค่ 5 สี คือแดง ขาว ดำ เขียว และสีหมากสุก ส่วนท้ายเรือเรียกว่า หางวรรณ นิยมแกะเป็นลายกะสลักเป็นลายไอยราหางหงส์ กนกเปลวไฟ นิยมตกแต่งด้วยการแขวนพู่ รูปทรง สีสัน ต่างกันไป

“The monk who conserves and inherits the art of craving of Nan’s racing boat prow which is the one of the national wisdoms.”

Nan’s boat racing is the local culture which has remained with the province for a long time. It was an inspiration for development of draft skills in order to create valuable artwork for Baan Donchai community. Carvednaga prow, which is called “Hua O”, consists of nose, canine (Keiw Ma), Miew Tae, KiewYoi, Kiew Fong, eyes, chin, check, ears, crest, nose hole, external gums, and internal gums. Inside of the opened mouth are fangs on which bells are hung. The popular pattern of boat body is vine (Taowan), Karjangpattern, Kanok pattern, and SamtuaKawm-Ngai pattern arranged in order. Five colors which include red, white, green, and ripe areca-nutcolor, are used. The tail of the boat which is called “Hang Wan” is carved in Iyara Hang Hong, KanokPlew Fai pattern decoated with tassels. The forms, shapes and colors can be different.
