การทำงานสลักเงินนั้นต้องมีสมาธิ ค่อยๆ ตอกไปทำไปทุกวันนี้ก็ยังทำอยู่ แรงบันดาลใจของครูนั้นอยู่ที่การได้เห็นงานที่ออกมางดงามก็จะคิดว่าเราสามารถทำได้สวยกว่านี้อีก เหมือนเราได้แข่งกับตัวเอง ครูเองมีความตั้งมั่นว่าจะสืบทอดอาชีพดุนโลหะ สลักเงิน และถ่ายทอดให้กับคนรุ่นหลังต่อๆ ไป จึงเริ่มนำเอาลวดลายไทย และล้านนามาผสมกับศิลปะร่วมสมัย ทำออกมาเป็นชิ้นงานออกจำหน่าย แม้ในระยะเริ่มแรกจะยังไม่ค่อยมีลูกค้าคนไทยสนใจมากนัก แต่ผลงานของครูดิเรกกลับได้รับคำชื่นชมและเป็นที่ชื่นชอบของชาวต่างชาติเป็นอย่างมาก จากการบอกเล่าปากต่อปาก กลายเป็นสินค้าที่มีออเดอร์จากต่างประเทศ และโรงแรมระดับ 5 ดาวทั้งในเมืองไทยและเมืองนอกสั่งเข้ามาไม่ขาดระยะ ด้วยความที่กลัวศิลปะการสลักเงินจะสูญหายไปครูจึงมุ่งมั่นที่จะถ่ายทอดความรู้ที่มีให้กับลูกศิษย์ทุกคนอย่างไม่ปิดบัง ทั้งที่ในอดีตคนในครอบครัวของครู “หวงวิชา” เชิงช่างและไม่ถ่ายทอดให้กับคนนอกอย่างเด็ดขาด

Silver embossing requires concentration, so we have to make it calmly. I am inspired when I see my finished work and tell myself that I could make a better one. It seems like I am competing with myself. I determine to inherit the art of metal and silver embossing as a profession as well as giving knowledge to the new generations, so I have started to mix Thai and Lanna motifs with contemporary art and make products for sale. Though it was not successful among Thai customers at the beginning, Master Direk’s work became famous and accepted by foreign visitors. Word of mouth has made him receiving purchase orders from overseas and 5-star hotels both locally and internationally. The master has tried to transfer his knowledge to all students with all his might with an aim to maintain this art as long as possible although traditionally his ancestors had never taught this craft to anyone outside the family.
